History
Built to Last
Construction of The Gables began in 1890 and was completed in 1896. The house was built for Mr. Jacobus Johannes Louw, who acquired the farm Springboklaagte along with the property now located at 21A Viljoen Street in 1891. He designed it to accommodate his large family of twelve children, himself and his spouse.
Rather than looking to overseas architecture for inspiration, Louw chose a style that reflected the local character of Middelburg — creating a home that has stood as a witness to the town's entire modern history.
Today, The Gables is recognised as the oldest standing house in Middelburg, lovingly preserved and operated as a guest house by the De Villiers family.
A Timeline of The Gables
Construction
The house is built for Jacobus Johannes Louw. The Victorian architecture reflects the local style of the era rather than European imports — a deliberate choice by Louw to root the building firmly in its Middelburg surroundings.
Louw Acquires the Farm
Mr. J.J. Louw purchases the farm Springboklaagte, including the property at what is now 21A Viljoen Street. The house is designed to comfortably house his family of fourteen.
The Boer War
British forces occupy Middelburg. The house is commandeered as a military hospital and officer's mess. Louw himself serves as a prisoner of war in India during this period, unable to return to his beloved home.
General Jan Smuts
The house serves as an annex to the residence of General Jan Smuts — one of South Africa's most celebrated figures — before Smuts relocates to Doringlaagte (today known as Irene).
Le Roux Family
Ownership passes to the Le Roux family, who maintain the property through the early decades of the twentieth century, preserving the Victorian character of the house.
Hammond Era & Subdivision
Mr. and Mrs. Hammond become the owners and subsequently subdivide the premises — separating the stables and wagon house (northern section) from the cottage quarters (southern section).
Guest House Foundation
Mrs. Heleen Gouws oversees the excavation of the foundations that would transform The Gables into a formal guest house — beginning the property's next great chapter.
De Villiers Family
The De Villiers family — owners of the adjacent property — acquire The Gables and open it to guests, committing to honour the home's extraordinary history while offering warm, modern hospitality.
